I like this story as it acknowledges the importance of friendship, whether it is with a person or a cuddly toy. Lily sees Blue Kangaroo as her best friend and wants to include him in her new adventure. In the story, family is also important as we see how helpful Lily’s family are in preparing Lily for school, giving her reassurance that starting school is not a scary time, but a fun time. I think the illustrations in this picture book support the text wonderfully. The illustrations are colourful and allow the reader to visualise the story, portraying the emotion in Lily’s face in each picture. It is an exciting and enjoyable story to read.
I believe this gentle and reassuring story would be suitable for early Key Stage 1 students who may be starting school for the first time.
It would be a good book for teachers (and parents) to read to children. Children can then read the book independently once they learn to read.
